How much does a garden irrigation system cost?

What actually affects the price — zones, components, controllers and labour — and how to get a meaningful quote.

There is no single irrigation price

An irrigation system is designed around your garden, so there is no flat rate. The cost depends on how many zones your garden needs, the components specified, the distance from a water source and whether a power supply is available for an electric controller. The most useful way to compare quotes is to understand what is included.

What affects the cost

  • •Number of zones — lawns, borders, pots and beds are usually zoned separately so each gets the right water.
  • •Components — pop-up sprinklers, drip lines, micro-sprays, solenoid valves and the controller.
  • •Controller type — battery tap controllers are inexpensive; multi-zone electric and Wi-Fi controllers cost more.
  • •Water source — a tap-based system is simpler; a mains-fed in-ground system needs a controlled connection and pressure regulation.
  • •Power supply — an electric controller needs an outdoor socket; adding one is an electrician's job.
  • •Access — laying pipework under existing lawns and paving takes more care than a new-build garden.
  • •Rainwater integration — adding a tank and pump to feed the system increases the scope but cuts mains water use.

Rough ranges (guidance only)

As a general guide, a simple one- or two-zone tap-based system with a battery controller and drip lines is the most affordable option. A multi-zone in-ground system with pop-up sprinklers, solenoid valves and an electric controller is a larger investment. Adding a Wi-Fi controller such as Hunter Hydrawise, rain sensors or a rainwater tank increases the cost further. We always provide a fixed, itemised quote after a site visit so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

How to get a meaningful quote

Ask what zones are included, which components and controller are specified, whether a power supply is needed, and what servicing is offered. A quote that simply says 'irrigation system' without breaking down zones and parts is hard to compare. We design the system to your garden and quote against that design.

Servicing is part of the cost

Budget for a spring start-up, a mid-season check and an autumn winterisation. Regular servicing catches blocked nozzles and leaking valves early and keeps the system efficient — which also keeps water use down.
