Cutting Hedge designs and installs professional garden lighting across London and Surrey. From a simple uplit tree and pathway lights to a fully zoned smart system, every scheme is planned around your garden's features and how you use the space after dark — so the right light reaches the right place, with the right mood.

Why professionally designed garden lighting matters
Good garden lighting extends the time you spend outside and transforms the view from the house after dark. A well-designed scheme picks out the best features — a specimen tree, a stone wall, a water feature — guides you safely along paths and steps, and adds depth and atmosphere without flooding the garden with light. Because it uses low-energy LED, it costs very little to run while making the whole garden feel larger, safer and more inviting.
Low-voltage LED systems
All our schemes use low-voltage (12V or 24V) LED fittings. They're safe to touch, cheap to run, extremely long-lived and available in a range of beam angles and colour temperatures from warm amber to crisp white. LED lets us light a tree, a path and a patio from a single discreet transformer, with no bulb changes for years and running costs measured in pence per night.
Lighting for trees, planting and features
Spike uplighters set at the base of ornamental trees and architectural planting throw light up through the canopy, turning a specimen tree into a nighttime feature. Recessed lights set into walls, steps and decking wash surfaces with light and make routes safe after dark, while narrow-beam spotlights pick out statues, pots and water features. We position each fitting to flatter the garden, not overpower it.

Path, step and deck lighting
Low-level path lights, recessed step lights and deck-mounted markers guide you and your guests safely through the garden in the dark. We space them to mark changes of level and changes of direction without glare, using shields and low-wattage lamps so the eye reads the route rather than the fitting. It's the finishing touch that makes an evening in the garden feel finished.

Smart, timer and app control
Where remote control is wanted we fit smart controllers and outdoor-rated smart sockets that connect to your Wi-Fi. Switch the whole garden on from a phone, dim the entertaining zone, set a photocell to turn lights on at dusk, or group zones into scenes — entertaining, relaxing, security — all scheduled to suit the way you live.

Security lighting
Discreet, effective lighting is one of the best deterrents to night-time intruders. We fit motion-activated and dusk-to-dawn security lights at key points, and can integrate them into the wider lighting scheme so security lighting doesn't look like a car park. Warm, low-level lighting left on through the evening signals that the house and garden are occupied, even when you're away.
Retro-fitting and repairs
As well as installing lighting as part of a full landscape build, we retro-fit lighting into established gardens — running discreet cable along fences, under mulch and into existing beds with minimal disruption. We also fault-find and repair existing installations, replacing failed transformers, corroded fittings and water-damaged cable, and can upgrade older halogen systems to long-life LED.

How a garden lighting scheme is built up
A great lighting scheme is built in layers. We start with task lighting for paths and steps so the garden is safe to move through, add feature lighting to pick out trees, walls and water, then layer in ambient and security lighting to set the mood. Everything runs on discreet low-voltage cable under a single controller, with smart or timer control to bring it to life at dusk.
